Longhorn Network reached an important milestone Monday when its parent company Disney announced a wide-ranging agreement with Dish Network.
LHN, which had to fight for space on local cable systems to achieve legitimacy, will now be carried on one of the two major satellite distributors all over the nation. The Dish agreement will give ESPN and Texas officials more firepower to go after DirecTV, the nation’s largest satellite cable distributor.
ESPN announced the agreement late Monday. The network is planning to make LHN and Dish officials available for interviews on Tuesday.
According to an ESPN press release, the deal will give Dish subscribers access to Longhorn Network and the upcoming SEC Network upon its debut this summer.
Dish Network had approximately 14 million subscribers at the end of 2013, according to ESPN’s press release. In its third quarter earnings released posted in November, DirecTV announced it had surpassed 37 million subscribers.
The Dish agreement is a shot in the arm for LHN, which recently lost Dave Brown. As vice president for programming and acquisitions, Brown helped get LHN off the ground. Now, he’ll focus more on scheduling marquee matchups for other ESPN properties.
