Incoming Texas freshman Jerrod Heard is spending his spring break with quarterback guru George Whitfield, the same person who worked extensively with Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.
Heard is one of several prominent quarterbacks spending the week in San Diego working with Whitfield.
“It’s going great, enjoying every minute,” Heard told the American-Statesman via text on Monday. “And I’m learning a lot.”
Heard also retweeted the following message about his whereabouts on his personal Twitter account.

The Texas quarterback competition is wide open this spring. But Heard will not participate in spring drills, which begin March 18. That leaves David Ash and Tyrone Swoopes as the only two scholarship quarterbacks available to impress new quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson and offensive coordinator Joe Wickline.
Whitfield has become widely recognized a star quarterback coach for his training methods on the Southern California beaches. Whitfield spent extended time with Manziel over the last two years, and he’s convinced the former Texas A&M star has become a solid pocket passer.
