Texas linebacker Dalton Santos told television station KLTV in Tyler that his mother, Vista, is recovering from open-heart surgery after a grass-roots Internet movement raised $66,000 to help with costs.
KLTV reported that Santos is already back into his off-season conditioning program and showed photos of the family at Vista’s bedside.
“I’m just glad things went they way they did,” Santos told the station. “She’s (Vista) looking good, feeling good. And it’s just a blessing.”
Santos said the family was overwhelmed with the support from the donations that poured in, many of them anonymously. The Texas compliance office determined that Santos did not violate any NCAA rules by asking for help on the Internet. Vista Santos is a single mother of three who does not have insurance.
With his mother’s procedure behind him, Santos can focus on football. He said the Longhorns have bought into coach Charlie Strong’s system and the players feel good about the upcoming season.
“I think guys are feeding off what he’s bringing to the program,” Santos told KLTV. “I’d watch out for us. Them Texas Longhorns are going to be pretty dang good.”
