Texas vs. Notre Dame: The expanded boxscore

FIRST QUARTER

Texas 7, Notre Dame 7 — Texas and Notre Dame exchanged touchdown catches on their first drives of the season. In his college debut, freshman quarterback Shane Buechele was 4 of 5 on that drive, including his TD toss.

Notre Dame: Equanimeous St. Brown 13-yard pass from DeShone Kizer (Justin Yoon PAT), 12:28

The drive: 6 plays, 78 yards, 2:32; Key play: Tarean Folston broke free for a 54-yard run to place Notre Dame into scoring position.

Texas: Armanti Foreman 19-yard pass from Shane Buechele (Trent Domingue kick), 9:30

The drive: 11 plays, 75 yards, 2:58; Key play: Texas converted a 4th and 1 from Notre Dame’s 21.

SECOND QUARTER

Halftime. Texas 21, Notre Dame 14 — The three guys who competed for Texas’ quarterback job made plays with their legs, hands and arms. Tyrone Swoopes scored from the 18-Wheeler, and Buechele added a short run and connected with Jerrod Heard on a long 68-yard catch. As for Notre Dame, St. Brown finished the first half with more touchdown catches in the first half of 2016 (two) than he had receptions in all of 2015 (one).

The drive: 16 plays, 88 yards, 5:13; Key play: On fourth-and-2 from Notre Dame’s 40, D’Onta Foreman kept the drive alive with a 3-yard run.

Notre Dame: St. Brown 30-yard pass from Kizer, 3:44

The drive: 7 plays, 75 yards, 3:29; Key play: On the previous play, Kizer gained 13 yards to Texas’ 30 off a quarterback draw.

The drive: 7 plays, 75 yards, 3:29; Key play: Buechele hit Heard for a 68-yard strike down to the 1.

THIRD QUARTER

Texas 31, Notre Dame 28 — Buechele’s bomb to John Burt was his second touchdown pass of the night, but his first-ever interception set up a Notre Dame score. The Irish, who trailed by 17 points at one point, crawled to within three in the final minute and threatened to tie it, but Naashon Hughes blocked a 36-yard field goal try.

The drive: 2 plays, 75 yards, 31 seconds

Texas: Domingue 25-yard field goal, 9:14

The drive: 8 plays, 54 yards, 3:01; Key play: A 15-yard personal foul penalty on third-and-5 from Notre Dame’s 38 moved Texas into field goal position.

Notre Dame: Kizer 29-yard run (Yoon kick), 7:39

The drive: 4 plays, 61 yards, 1:35; Key play: Kizer hit St. Brown for a 17-yard completion on a slant down to Texas’ 29.

Notre Dame: Torii Hunter Jr. 5-yard pass from Kizer (Yoon kick), 5:06

FOURTH QUARTER

Texas 37, Notre Dame 37 — The fact that this game ended up tied after regulation is a testament to defense on special teams; consider that Naashon Hughes’ block of a field goal ended up saving the day … just as Notre Dame’s 2-point play off a return from a blocked extra point turned a 37-35 Texas lead into the 37-37 deadlock that forced overtime.

Notre Dame: Josh Adams 17-yard pass from Kizer (Yoon kick), 10:57

The drive: 7 plays, 46 yards, 2:48; Key play: A third-down stop on a Hughes sack of Kizer was nullified by Antwuan Davis’ defensive holding penalty, giving Notre Dame new life in the red zone.

Texas: D’Onta Foreman 19-yard run (kick blocked), 3:29

The drive: 8 plays, 68 yards, 1:54; Key play: On third-and-5 from the 19, Foreman rattled off a big 19-yard gain down to Notre Dame’s 3.

Notre Dame: Shaun Crawford PAT return, 3:29

OVERTIME

Texas 50, Notre Dame 47 — Both the Longhorns and Irish scored touchdowns on their opening possessions, but the Horns forced a Notre Dame field goal on the Irish’s second OT drive. That opened the door for Texas’ run game powered by Swoopes and Foreman, who combined to push the Longhorns over the top.

The drive: 4 plays, 25 yards; Key play: Buechele found Jacorey Warrick for a 20-yard pass on the first play of the drive.
