Freshmen advance at ITA All-American Championships

Posted October 6th, 2016

Texas freshmen Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard each came away victorious at the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday.

Ito defeated No. 40 Alex Ghilea of Oklahoma 6-2, 7-6 (5) before Sigsgaard took down No. 12 Konrad Zieba of Northwestern 6-1, 6-4.

“These two don’t play like freshmen,” said UT head coach Michael Center. “They play maturely and with a great deal of poise. I haven’t seen them get rattled yet. They compete well and give themselves opportunities to win.”

Ito will face Logan Smith of Southern Cal and Sigsgaard will take on Herkko Pollanen of Ohio State on Friday.

Ito and Harrison Scott fell in the first round of the doubles main draw 6-3, 6-4 to Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State.

On Tuesday Ito and Sigsgaard won twice to qualify for the singles main draw.
