First take: Longhorns 78, Central Arkansas 50

Texas advances to the second round and will play North Carolina State on Sunday.

Brooke McCarty scored 15 points and Joyner Holmes added 10 as third-seeded Texas defeated 14th-seeded Central Arkansas 78-50 in the first round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Friday at the Erwin Center.

Texas (24-8) advances to play North Carolina State in the second round Sunday at the Erwin Center. The game time has not yet been determined, but will either be at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m.

Texas shot a season-high 63.3 percent in the first half to take a 48-20 lead at the break. Ten of the 11 Longhorns who saw action scored in the half.

Central Arkansas (26-5) came to life in the third quarter, outscoring the sloppy Horns 23-14 in the period. Texas finished with 21 turnovers. The Longhorns shot 51.7 percent from the field.

North Carolina State (23-8) had little trouble with Auburn in Friday’s opener, beating the Tigers 62-48. The Wolfpack led by as many as 27 points in the second half. Dominique Wilson scored a game-high 23 points and North Carolina State owned a 46-32 advantage under the boards.
