Hookem.com asked Longhorns fans to “Sound Off” on our Facebook page after Saturday’s 51-41 loss to Maryland in the first game of the Tom Herman era.
Frustration was palpable near the end of the game, as some fans started throwing items onto the field at Royal-Memorial Stadium. As you can imagine, we got hundreds of responses, many of them informed and passionate.
Here’s a sample of some popular ones. They have been edited for space and clarity.
Jeff Dominguez: No improvement of special teams, defensive and offensive lines were bad, play calling forgot we had a run game, QB play was not special, tackling is not existent, DB coverage is non existent. There are many problems. Questions is: “Where do you start?”
John E. Swindells: Takes me back to the days of Coach Ed Price, last one before Darrell Royal. They have got to get a running game and stay out from under all those penalties (cost them at least 14 points today).
Chad Boothe: I’m sorry I just don’t get (Kyle) Porter getting the start over (Chris) Warren. And why didn’t they give it to Warren more? He is just as good as (D’Onta) Foreman and they didn’t give him the ball enough. What the hell was Shane (Buechele) thinking at the beginning of the game almost taking a safety? He seemed out of it. Poor play calling in the red zone. We have a 6’6″ receiver! Why are we not lobbing it to him in the end zone?!
Claudine Woods: It is a disappointing loss, but these young men have to learn, and they have to learn the way we all have to. True Longhorn fans do not throw things on the field. Show class and good sportsmanship, whether we win or lose. Think about all the people who have lost everything in Harvey, and still they are helping others. Get your priorities right.
Gaye Cuevas: Wow! We sure are critical! I saw a team that played better than what we saw last year! Remember the 2016 Kansas game? We played a team today on equal footing. Big 10. Not UTEP or another team not on our same playing field. Coach Lee Corso this morning called them “cupcakes.” We should give this team our encouragement and support. … If we as fans believe [seriously] that Rome was built in a day or better yet … that Texas should go undefeated, brothers and sisters please!
Brian Rieger: Go back to playing crappy FCS teams, just to get the idea of winning in general. At this point, I wouldn’t care if the entire non-conference slate was D-3 cupcakes. Or even Pop Warner teams. Learn how to “just win a game!”
