Charlie Strong hopes to return for 2017, but ‘I have not been told’

Charlie Strong said Friday he came to the University of Texas to do two things — win national championships and change lives. “When I took the job, I just felt like I would impact the players inside the locker room,” Strong said moments after the Longhorns’ 31-9 season-ending loss to TCU. “But it was more than just that. I looked at it as I have the chance to impact society and change society.” Strong truly believes his role as the head football coach is paternal, one who should mold 18- to 22-year-old athletes into men, possibly future leaders. But in a bottom-line business, Strong earns more than $5 million annually to win football games, and even he admitted the wins and losses, “they don’t stack up.” On Friday, Texas finished its third consecutive losing season. With a 16-21 overall record, Strong has the lowest winning percentage of any coach in UT … Read more

Bohls: Charlie Strong is a good guy, he just wasn’t THE guy for Texas

Charlie Strong’s a good guy. He just wasn’t THE guy. And that’s a shame. It didn’t work for a variety of reasons, but race wasn’t one of them. Oh, I’m sure it was for some fans and boosters, who didn’t want it to work because of Charlie’s skin color. And … Read More

Three and out: Texas fires Charlie Strong after 16-21 record

With an authentic personality and disarming charm, Charlie Strong may be one of the most well-liked individuals ever to work inside the University of Texas athletic department. But it always boils down to wins and losses. In three seasons, Strong was 16-21 and holds the lowest … Read More

Golden: TCU puts the finishing touches on Texas’ Charlie Strong era

Charlie Strong: Jan. 5, 2014-Nov. 25, 2016. If Kansas was a funeral, then TCU was the burial. The Strong era came to an unspectacular end before a sparse crowd at Royal-Memorial Stadium on Friday. Many stayed away because they had already seen enough after the Kansas jaw dropper. The truth … Read More

Texas OC Sterlin Gilbert could be out, too; ‘I knew the situation’

Offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert knew the stakes. He came to Austin knowing this could be a one-year stopover with the Longhorns. And yet, Gilbert came anyway, coaxed into joining UT after being wooed personally by the school president last December. “The thing about coaching nowadays, every year is a new … Read More

Bohls: His final lopsided loss should spell the end of Charlie Strong’s tenure

Decisive. That was TCU’s rout of Texas in Friday’s season finale was. And that very fact should make the decision by school president Gregory L. Fenves to make a coaching change that much easier. The Texas administration made nothing official on Friday night after the Longhorns’ lopsided 31-9 loss to … Read More

Texas offense goes out with a whimper, not a bang, as season closes

Perhaps fittingly, Texas’ 2016 football season ended with an interception. Freshman Shane Buechele’s heave toward the end zone was nabbed by TCU safety Niko Small in the final seconds of a loss to TCU on Friday. The 47-yard throw was meaningless — Texas lost 31-9 — but it closed the … Read More
