Texas Longhorn projections and predictions - September 2, 2010 at 11:41 am

  • It seems like every team inside the top 15 has been pegged to play in the national title game by somebody out there claiming to be an expert. From Alabama to Boise State, and Texas all the way down to Miami. I hope Waterford Crystal is abundant this year because it seems as if everyone is taking one home in January. With the college football season kicking off today and Texas kicking off in just two days (longest two days of my life) I’m putting together a list of all the guesses by the “experts” from the Texas-Rice game to where Texas will eventually end up….
  • The one thing we can all agree on is that Texas is going to destroy Rice: David Ubben, John Tamanaha and Mike Huguenin pick UT to win big.
  • As for the season projections, we’ve got a lot of different opinions:
  • SI guys are about 50/50 on Texas making a BCS bowl with none putting it into the title game.
  • CBSsports has the Longhorns in the Fiesta bowl playing Pitt (they also have OU playing in the Orange bowl).
  • Fox Sports makes the idiotic prediction that Texas, A&M and OU will tie, a la 2008, with Texas winning the tiebreaker and going to the final Big 12 title game.
  • Only 2 out of 12 ESPN “experts” pick Texas to even win the Big 12, although one of the two, Bruce Feldman, has the Horns playing for the national title.
  • Two other ESPN people picked bowl games. Mark Shclabach has Texas playing Florida in the Sugar Bowl (makes sense) while Andrea Adelson has the Longhorns playing in the Alamo Bowl. Yup, the Alamo Bowl. Behind Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Um, has she seen A&M lately?

Time Warner reaches deal with Disney/ESPN - August 30, 2010 at 9:38 am

  • A riot by annoyed sports fans and enraged little children was avoided when Time Warner Cable and Walt Disney Co. announced a deal earlier today. The deadline for the two companies to shake hands was Thusrday, the day college football officially begins and only two days before Texas and Rice play on ESPN (owned by Disney). Though the deal is not yet official, it looks as if thousands of people in Burnt Orange clothes and Phineas and Ferb pajamas will not have to take to the streets. Whew.

Two top 2011 RB prospects shine on ESPN - August 29, 2010 at 7:01 am

  • Cibolo Steele and Texas-bound Malcolm Brown took on San Antonio Madison and undecided Aaron Green Saturday night and both running backs showed why they’ve garnered so much hype.
  • Green took the spotlight early with a first-quarter score and showed some flashes of the speed that has propelled him to the top of the running backs list.

Green probably won the day (along with the rest of his team which topped Steele 28-23) by running for 169 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries (good for 7.3 yards per rush).
  • Brown ran for more yards than Green, 179, on more carries, 25, and had one less touchdown than Green (one of Browns’ two was a pass reception), giving the edge to the Madison running back. Brown had trouble getting going early, but it seemed to be more that the offensive line couldn’t make a block to save their life than Malcolm Brown not playing well. To Brown’s credit, he had the biggest touchdown of the day, reeling off an 88-yard touchdown run by bowling over a two Madison players and then giving some kid a stiff-arm he won’t forget anytime soon on his way to the endzone.

That run alone made my night. I can’t wait to see this kid as a Longhorn.
  • I can’t imagine both of these guys going to the same school, they’re just too talented individually to play at the same place in college. But if Mack Brown could pull off the unthinkable, Texas would have one of the best backfields in the country as soon as the ink dried on the letters of intent.

Pre-game speeches and Time Warner Cable - August 26, 2010 at 12:11 pm

  • There are a few things on my mind this afternoon at the Hookem.com headquarters. One is a promotion by Texas Longhorns Energy, and the other is Time Warner Cable, which might not show the Horns game against Rice.
  • Give your best pregame speech … or maybe not
  • Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns have opened the door for fans like you and me to give the team a pre-game speech. Yes you. This at first sounded like a very cool idea to me, but I soon realized this could be very, very bad. I totally support anybody deciding to make their own pep talk to the Longhorns before whatever game, but I beg you, I’m pleading with you, don’t make Longhorn fans look dumb. Your video will be going on the Internet for everyone to see. Don’t put us all in a bad light without thinking through what you’re going to say, hit record and give some terrible speech. For those of you who want to participate, we’re all in your collective hands – don’t embarrass us.
  • No ESPN … No HORNS?!
  • On to my second point; I’m angry today, and all of you might be soon, too. Thanks to a dispute between Time Warner Cable and the Walt Disney Co. (which owns ESPN), the Horns-Owls game might not be on cable.
  • I just renewed with TWC a few weeks ago. It was the easiest, and possibly cheapest, way to hook up my cable and Internet. I was a customer during the NBC fiasco, suffered through having to watch “The Office” and other shows online but couldn’t imagine something like that happening again. This one’s worse, way worse. If a deal can’t be reached, TWC might drop ESPN on September 2nd, TWO &$*(#I@ DAYS BEFORE TEXAS-RICE!! There is hope: TWC and Disney may come to a deal and all will be well. All I can say is, they better. Or I’ll be switching to DirecTV faster than Tre Newton can run the 40.

News and notes from Texas’ final open practice - August 13, 2010 at 10:41 am

  • The Longhorns held their second of only two open practices yesterday. Fans and members of the media will now have to wait until September 4th in Houston before we get to see the Burnt Orange on the football field. For those of you who didn’t get a chance to go last night, I’ve spent the morning finding the best tidbits of information about last night’s practice.
  • The offense seemed to have a better day in general Thursday. On Wednesday the defense dictated the practice, but Thursday’s was much more even.
  •  - Garrett Gilbert was the best player on the field tonight. Geoff Ketchum
       (Orangebloods)
  • Gilbert may have been the best player on the field on Thursday night, but it will be his wide receivers that really dictate whether or not the sophomore can have a great season. And on Thursday, there were good and bad moments from the wide outs.
  •  - I’m a bit concerned at the number of drops. Ross Lucksinger
       (InsideTexas)
  •  - If I were picking the top three receivers on this team, it would have to be Chiles,
       Hales and Marquise Goodwin
    Lucksinger
  •  - Davis made a few grabs throughout practice, and again looked like a potential impact
       receiver.
    Dustin McComas (Orangebloods)
  • The backup quarterback spot looks like it may be leaning towards Connor Wood, but they both still have work to do.
  •  - Both Connor Wood and Case McCoy made a few quality throws, but they truly looked
       like true freshman often.
    McComas
     - Case got some good protection from second group a couple of times, but didn’t
       connect down the field.
    Ketchum
  • Mike Davis got lit up by Aaron Williams
  •  - If Mike Davis wasn’t introduced to division one football yet, Aaron Williams made sure
       he was Thursday night.
    McComas
     - The Hard Hat Award is likely going to CB Aaron Williams for his de-cleater on WR
       Mike Davis,
    Chip Brown (Orangebloods)
  • The freshmen defensive ends had a huge couple of practices including a Pick-6 by Reggie Wilson during Thursday’s practice.
  •  - The premier duo of Jackson Jeffcoat and Reggie Wilson definitely made its presence
       felt on Thursday
    McComas
     - Freshman DE Reggie Wilson had a huge night for the defense.Brown
