Why Rice (1-1) won: The Owls tagged Texas starter Kacy Clemens for six runs in the first inning. Clemens, a sophomore making his first start, gave up a cycle in the inning, serving up four singles, a double, a triple, and a two-run home run to clean-up hitter John Clay Reeves.

Why Texas (1-1) lost: See above.


Key stat: Texas struck out seven times over the final three innings, including three times in the ninth. After Bret Boswell’s RBI double cut the deficit to one, Rice reliever Matt Ditman fanned Zane Gurwitz and Travis Jones to end the game.
