The Longhorns scored twice in a two-minute span to defeat Abilene Christian 2-1 on Sunday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
UT’s Lindsey Meyer put the Horns ahead in the 70th minute when she got the ball in the middle of the box from Texas’ Julia Dyche and headed it past ACU goalie Sydney Newton from seven yards out.
One minute, 38 seconds later, Texas freshman freshman Mikayla Flores got crossing pass from senior forward Kelsey Shimmick and kicked a running volley from five yards out past goalie Madeline Grimes. Newton was replaced after Meyer’s goal and had 11 saves through 69 minutes.
“Credit to the goalkeeper that started the game for Abilene Christian, she had tremendous saves.” said Texas head coach Angela Kelly.
Texas (3-2-2) out-shot the Wildcats 26-9 for the match and managed to put 14 shots on frame.
The Wildcats (1-6-1) got within one in the 78th minute, when Sophie Standifer got the ball off a Texas turnover and beat Texas goalie Abby Smith. Smith had five saves and leads the Big 12 with 43 this season.
