Texas freshman linebacker Ed Freeman is out 6-8 weeks with a right shoulder injury, he told the American-Statesman on Monday.
Freeman added that an X-ray later in the day will determine if surgery is required.
The injury, which occurred in Saturday’s loss to Cal, initially appeared to be a tactic to slow Cal’s offense. Freeman collapsed to the ground inside the red zone, agitating Cal quarterback Jared Goff.
Freeman said the injury happened on the previous play and that coaches instructed him to fall down so he could leave the game.
Freeman, of Arlington Bowie, is a starter in Texas’ three-linebacker set. He has seven tackles and two tackles for loss. Anthony Wheeler is listed behind Freeman at weakside linebacker.
