No. 2 Texas sweeps No. 7 Jayhawks

UT’s Paulina Prieto-Cerame had a career-high 16 kills in the second-ranked Longhorns’ sweep of seventh-ranked Kansas (25-16, 25-19, 25-14) Friday night at Gregory Gym.

The loss snapped Kansas’ school-record 19 game win streak and gave Texas (18-1, 8-0) its 16th straight Big 12 victory.

Texas held Kansas (19-1, 7-1) to a .155 hitting percentage and hit .336 for the match. The Jayhawks led the NCAA in hitting at .318 and had held opponents to a .151 percentage coming into the match. It was the third straight match that the Longhorns held their opponent to under a .200 hitting percentage.


Prieto-Cerame had just two errors and hit .483 with three blocks. Texas senior Amy Neal had 14 kills with 11 digs and Chiaka Ogbogu added nine kills with five blocks.  UT’s Molly McCage had five kills and three blocks assists to move two blocks assists away from tying Errica Hibben’s school record.

Prieto-Cerame broke a 3-3 tie in the first set with three consecutive kills to put Texas up 6-3. The Jayhawks got within two at 11-9, then Texas scored four straight points to lead 15-9. Texas held at least a five point edge the rest of the set and won it 25-16. Prieto-Cerame had seven kills and Ogbogu had five in the first set.

Kansas started the second set with a 5-0 run, forcing a Texas timeout. Kansas held the lead until a block by McCage tied it at 18-18. Texas took its first lead at 19-18 after a kill by Neal and closed the set on a 6-1 run.

Texas broke a 10-10 tie in the third set with an 8-2 run to take a 18-12 lead. Following a Kansas timeout, Texas scored five straight to go up 23-12 and took the set 25-14.
