No. 15 Texas men’s tennis blanks Southern Mississippi 4-0 in finals in Corpus Christi

15th-ranked Texas swept Southern Mississippi 4-0 in the finals of the the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Saturday in Corpus Christi.

Texas was 3-0 at the event, outscored opponents 13-0, and won every singles match in straight sets. The Longhorns dispatched UT-San Antonio 5-0 and Louisiana 4-0 on Friday to reach the finals.

Texas won matches at the first and third doubles positions to win the doubles point and won three straight singles matches to beat the Golden Eagles on Saturday.


“We had a good showing today, and I thought the guys really played hard,” said Texas coach Michael Center. “A lot of guys contributed this weekend. It was a great test for us to come down here and be the top seed and get the job done.”

UT’s Adrian Ortiz and Michael Riechmann defeated Daniel Merker and Tarun Surat at first doubles 6-3 and Longhorns Harrison Scott and John Mee notched a 6-3 win over Jorman Reyes and Rakshit Rishi to win the doubles point.

Texas junior George Goldhoff, who was named Big 12 men’s tennis player of the week on Thursday, won in straight sets against Wen-Po Tseng  6-1, 6-1 at first singles to put Texas up by two.

Scott added a 6-1, 6-3 win over Surat at second singles and Riechmann sealed the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Merker at fifth singles.
