Fred Akers joins Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame

Posted March 7th, 2016

Former University of Texas football coach Fred Akers will be inducted into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame on April 22 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Akers joins a class that includes Southern California offensive tackle Tony Boselli, SMU tailback Eric Dickerson, Notre Dame linebacker Bob Golic, Arkansas quarterback Fred Marshall and Cotton Bowl Athletic Association team selection chairman Dan Petty.

Akers and the rest of the inductees emerged from a field of 60 nominees.

It’ll be the second hall of fame Akers will join this year after he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame last month.

Akers led Texas to a thrilling comeback in the 1982 Cotton Bowl that saw the Longhorns overcome a 10-0 deficit to win 14-12 over Alabama. Akers went 1-2 in the Cotton Bowl, losing to Notre Dame 38-10 in 1978 and falling to Georgia in 1984 10-9.

The April 22 ceremony will begin at noon.
