UT’s Beau Hossler won his fifth tournament of the season after shooting a
69 in the final round of the Augusta Invitational Sunday, in Augusta, Georgia.
Hossler made an eagle on the ninth hole and birdied the 14th and 18th to win by two strokes. He is tied with Bob Estes for third place in program history with six career wins, only trailing Ben Crenshaw (16) and Justin Leonard (9). Crenshaw is the only other player in Texas history to win more that five tournaments in a season. The two-time Masters champion won seven tournaments in 1972.
The top-ranked Longhorns finished in second place at 24 under par, three shots behind winner Illinois. The Fighting illini shot 12 under par in the final round and had two players finish in the top ten. Illinois’ Charlie Danielson tied for second place with Chad Merzbacher of Tennessee at 9 under.
“We had four players in the top 13 this week in a field that resembles an NCAA Regional. And today, we had all players at par or better. We know Illinois is a great team, today that got the better of us.” said coach John Fields.
UT’s Doug Ghim posted his second-straight top-10 finish with a third-round 71 to tie for eighth.
Texas sophomore Taylor Funk shot a 69 and moved up nine spots to finish in 12th place at 4 under par. Gavin Hall shot a 70 on Sunday and tied for 13th place at 3 under.
