Felix homers to lift Longhorns to fifth win in a row

Posted April 6th, 2016

Celina Felix hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Texas Longhorns softball team to their fifth straight win, defeating the UTSA Roadrunners 3-2 on Wednesday night in San Antonio.

Felix went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Erin Shireman and Kelli Hanzel were the only other Longhorns to get hits in the game. Holly Kern did pick up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to score Stephanie Wong in the third inning.

Kristen Clark (2-1) picked up her second win of the season as she allowed two runs on six hits while striking out a career-high nine batters.

After the Longhorns went up 1-0 through three innings, Texas doubled the lead in the fourth with a Felix single to right center which drove home Hanzel.

The Roadrunners were able to cut the lead to 2-1 on a home run by Tess Soefje in the bottom of the fourth. UTSA tied the game in the sixth on another solo homer, this time by Kendall Burton. She also had a double in the game as she went 2-for-3 on the day.

After Felix put the Longhorns back up a run with her seventh-inning homer, the Roadrunners nearly rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning. A walk and a single put runners on first and second. Another walk loaded the bases, but an inning-ending fielder’s choice put the game away.

Texas will now turn its attention to Big 12 action this weekend as they face Texas Tech at home beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
