Posted June 7th, 2016

Texas freshman rower Mariam Soufi was named the Big 12 newcomer of the year while UT rowing head coach Dave O’Neill was named coach of the year, the league announced Tuesday.

Soufi rows for the Texas varsity eight boat and helped them reach a seventh overall finish at the NCAA Championships. Her boat took a victory in the consolation final last month.

The UT rowing team took eighth place overall at the Championships in the 22-team field. The varsity eight boat also won its second straight Big 12 individual title. As a team the Longhorns also earned a Big 12 team title, their sixth overall.

O’Neill has led Texas to two consecutive top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships after taking over at Texas two years ago. The Longhorns earned a seventh-place finish in 2015.
