Texas picked fifth in Big 12 preseason football poll

Posted July 14th, 2016

The media that covers the Big 12 believes Texas will be a middle-of-the-road team in 2016.

UT checks in at fifth in the league’s preseason poll, the same spot where it finished in a tie to end the 2015 season. The Longhorns were just 5-7 a year ago but return a talented core of young players including four sophomores who were named preseason all-conference on Wednesday.

As expected, defending champion and College Football Playoff semifinalist Oklahoma is an overwhelming favorite, picking up 24 of possible 26 first place votes. TCU, which received the other two first place votes, is second followed by Oklahoma State. In fourth is Baylor, which edged Texas by five points despite major offseason upheaval in the wake of the school’s rape scandal.

The bottom half of the poll begins with Texas Tech in sixth followed by West Virginia, Kansas State, Iowa State and Kansas.

The Big 12 will hold its media days next Monday and Tuesday in Dallas.
