Men’s golf team finishes fifth at Querencia Cabo Collegiate

The Texas Longhorns men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Three Longhorns finished in the top-18, but Texas dropped from second place after the third and final round.

Texas shot 846, 6-under, after carding a 291 in the third round. The Longhorns shot 282 in the second round to fall to second place after being tied for first after Day 1.

Scottie Scheffler shot the low round of the day for Texas, carding a 69 to finish at 217, tied for 35th place. He made four birdies and an eagle on the day.

Doug Ghim and Steven Chervony tied for 13th overall, each shooting 209, 4-under, after three rounds of competition.

Ghim shot 73, including two birdies, in the final round after shooting in the 60s (67-69) through the first two days of action.

Chervony shot 75 on Tuesday, following career lows on Sunday and Monday. He started the competition with a 66 on Sunday to sit in second place before he shot 68 on Monday.

Gavin Hall also shot in the 60s in the first two days of competition, but he finished the tournament in a tie for 18th place after shooting a 74 on Tuesday.

Nick Costello tied for 77th after shooting his best round of 75 on Tuesday.

Ten of the 15 teams in competition were ranked in the top-30 of Golfstat’s ranking.

“Finishing top five in this field was solid for our team,” head coach John Fields said. “Today’s round stings but will add to our motivation for success.”

Oklahoma St. came out on top of the tournament, shooting 823, 29-under. Baylor took second place at 19-under.

Corey Pereira of Washington took medalist honors, finishing at 204, 9-under.

The Longhorns get back to action beginning March 13 at the Lamkin San Diego Classic at San Diego Country Club.
