Texas sophomores Alecia Sutton and Joyner Holmes each scored in double figures to lead the 2017 USA Women’s U19 World Cup Team past Puerto Rico, 104-46, in the FIBA U19 World Cup round of 16 on Wednesday in Cividale de Friuli, Italy.
Holmes charted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also blocked two shots in 15 minutes of play. Sutton scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, brought down three rebounds and dished out three assists in 16 minutes.
The USA outrebounded Puerto Rico 72-37 overall and 38-18 on the offensive glass. The 72 boards marked a single-game USA U19 record, eclipsing the previous record of 70 set against Japan in 2013.
Next up for the U.S. (4-0) is a meeting with France (3-1) in Friday’s quarterfinals (time TBD).
