Texas freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger threw a pair of late interceptions and the Longhorns let a slim lead slip away in a 27-23 loss to Texas Tech in the regular-season finale Friday night.

Afterward, UT coach Tom Herman faced the media after finishing his first regular season campaign 6-6. Here is some of what he had to say.

On why Texas failed to score on its final four possessions:

“They stopped us.”

On being emotional after loss:

“Yeah. Losing that way hurts.”

On whether loss undoes progress made:

“No, we’re playing really hard and really physical, we just don’t play really well and really smart at times. But we will. That’s development. We have the hard part done and figured out. You can’t undo that.”

On performances by DBs Kris Boyd, DeShon Elliott:

“Kris played really well. Deshon is a Thorpe Award finalist. He’s a really good player, and every now and again they make plays. When the ball is in the air he has a knack for going and finding it.”

On why WR Armanti Foreman did not play down the stretch:

“Just normal H rotation.”

On if he considered subbing in QB Shane Buechele:

“I did. It’s hard not to. Having coached that position for so many years there’s a rhythm to it and it’s hard to come in cold, but the thought definitely crossed my mind.”

On continued mistakes by offense late in games:

“There’s no greater teacher than experience, but at some point when you continue to make the same mistakes you’ve got to try a different approach. We’ll figure out what buttons to push to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

On how to evaluate offense after difficult season:

“It’s hard. That’s a good question. You still don’t know who the key pieces of the offense are currently. What you can do is evaluate individuals and their growth over the season. You can evaluate effort and attitude, which I would grade very highly at this point. … Who gives you some optimism in terms of development?”
