About the series: Texas leads the all-time series 85-76, and the Longhorns have won six of the last eight. The Longhorns’ only four losses in the series dating back to the 2007-08 season were all in Lubbock. UT also knocked Tech out of the Big 12 tournament last season in the quarterfinals.

About the Longhorns: Probably best to let sleeping dogs lie, but guard Eric Davis Jr. had 22 points against TCU and then 18 more against Oklahoma State. He’s stepped it up in Andrew Jones’ absence. “Eric’s a feel-good guy,” coach Shaka Smart said. “If it was up to me to orchestrate things, he’d go in and hit a quick three, he’d get a layup, make a couple of free throws. Then, you could count on him to play really, really well.” … Freshman Jase Febres cooled off against the Cowboys, going 0 for 3 in 12 minutes. Both Febres and Jacob Young are the team’s two wildcard shooters. … Mo Bamba is still the only Big 12 player averaging more than 10 rebounds per game.

About the Red Raiders: Coming in ranked eighth in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, this is Tech’s second-highest ranking ever. The Red Raiders were seventh in March 1996 heading into the NCAA Tournament. That team’s Sweet 16 run is widely considered the best team in school history. … Tech is coming off a 72-71 win over No. 2 West Virginia, which matched the biggest upset in school history. Keenan Evans had a team-high 20 points. The Raiders have won 11 of 15 games when he scores at least 20 … Reserve Brandone Francis came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points. “There’s nothing I did for him,” coach Chris Beard said. “He chose to do the right thing and grow up.”
