Texas made an impression on out-of-state outside linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd when the 4-star from California visited Austin for a weekend coinciding with junior days. He made a return visit to Texas to watch the Longhorns start spring practice and pulled the trigger to become the fourth commitment in the 2019 class. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound product of Westlake Village (Calif.) is the No. 3-ranked outside linebacker in the country, per 247Sports Composite. He chose the Longhorns over programs like UCLA and Oregon.

It is a down year for linebacker in the state of Texas. Katy Cinco Ranch inside linebacker David Gbenda is the only in-state prospect at the position to hold an offer from the Longhorns outside of a few edge rushers who could be considered defensive ends.

Tom Herman and Todd Orlando were forced to leave the state at the position for the second cycle in a row when the Longhorns signed IMG Academy (Fla.) inside linebacker Ayodele Adeoye. Floyd is a similar player with the size to play inside linebacker and the athleticism to play outside linebacker, much like Malik Jefferson and Gary Johnson.

The Longhorns would like to add two more linebackers to the mix in the 2019 class with Gbenda the top target at inside linebacker. Players like NaNa Osafo-Mensah and Jermaine Johnson are defensive ends who could become outside linebackers in Orlando’s scheme. Florida prospect Rian Davis is another name to watch at linebacker.

Floyd joined 5-star wide receiver Jordan Whittington, 4-star quarterback Roschon Johnson and 3-star defensive end T’Vondre Sweat in the 2019 class. Expect the Longhorns to approach a full 25-man class in the 2019 cycle if numbers allow.
