Texas sophomore Emilee Hoffman edged Illinois’ Tristyn Nowlin in a match-play final to win the 2018 Women’s Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship on Saturday at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, Ill.

Hoffman won with a birdie on the 29th hole of the 36-hole playoff to secure an 8 and 7 victory. She became the second Texas golfer to win the event; former Big 12 Player of the Year Janice Olivencia won the title in 2002.

“I had hoped to play well and advance in this tournament,” Hoffman said. “My best club this week was my driver. My putting has been a problem this year, but I have worked hard to improve and it paid off this week.”

The All-Big 12 selection won twice on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals and defeated Alexis Miestowski of Indiana 1 up in the round of 32. She reached the final with a 4 and 3 win over Oklahoma’s Mikhaela Fortuna.

Hoffman joins a prestigious list of players who have won the event, including LPGA standouts Nancy Lopez, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr and Stacy Lewis.
