New Texas track and field coach Edrick Floréal has added the first piece to the puzzle that is his coaching staff.
Texas announced on Monday that Zeb Sion will serve as the school’s throws coach. Sion is the first hire made by Floréal, who took over UT’s track and field program on June 13.

Sion has previously coached at Stanford, Wake Forest and the University of Chicago. Over the past two years at Stanford, Sion mentored 11 All-Americans. He was recently named the 2018 USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Stanford’s female throwers tallied 31 points at the NCAA’s outdoor meet in June, which easily bested UT’s team total of seven points.
“I feel as if my entire career has been building for an opportunity like this one and I’m excited about the challenge ahead at Texas,” Sion said in a statement. “The type of student-athlete that we can attract here to the Forty Acres is something that I’m drawn to and I look forward to working with student-athletes who are driven to succeed both in the classroom and on the field of competition.”
Texas throwers worked under Ty Sevin this past season. As a freshman, Tripp Piperi earned All-American accolades in the shot put during the NCAA’s indoor and outdoor seasons. Rising junior Elena Bruckner earned top-10 finishes in the discus and hammer throw at the Big 12’s outdoor competition in May.
