Three-star cornerback Marques Caldwell pledges to Texas

Posted July 7th, 2018

Three-star cornerback Marques Caldwell became the 12th member of Texas’ 2019 recruiting class on Saturday afternoon. The cornerback from Alvin (Texas) pledged to the Ducks on Oct. 21 before backing off his pledge this offseason. He received a Texas offer on May 18 and was immediately favored to land in Austin. Caldwell joins Kenyatta Watson II as cornerback commitments in the 2019 class. He was a second-team all-district selection as a junior.

“Texas has been a dream school of mine. I love what coach (Tom) Herman is doing,” Caldwell said. “Me and coach (Jason) Washington have a great relationship and it can only get better.”

At 6-foot-1, Caldwell fits the mold of Texas’ current defensive back preference. Assistant coach Jason Washington has focused on long, lean cornerbacks like Anthony Cook, Jalen Green and Caden Sterns since arriving from Houston with Tom Herman. Caldwell excels in man-to-man coverage because of his length and is a wiling tackler.

Caldwell recorded 17 tackles and two interceptions in 2017. He also forced two fumbles, recovered one and registered his first sack on varsity. He picked up 32 tackles and eight pass breakups as a sophomore. He was largely untested as a junior.

It’s possible Texas closes shop at cornerback unless an elite player like Marcus Banks, Derek Stingley or Chris Steele wants to join the fold later in the cycle. Texas signed a trio of elite cornerbacks and safeties in the 2018 class and can afford to be picky in the defensive backfield in the 2019 cycle.
