Football season will be here before you know it. Through the dog days of summer, we’re going to get you prepared with a series on some of the best players Texas will face in 2018.
Who is he?
Dakota Allen, “Last Chance U.” It’s a title that is going to stick to the Texas Tech linebacker probably for the rest of his career. But unlike so many others, the Netflix series has been a good thing for Allen. He returned from his year in exile at East Mississippi Community College and led the Red Raiders in tackles last season.
“I’m just happy they got to see what actually happened,” he told the Dallas Morning News. “I feel if the show didn’t come out people would still have their own opinions and speculations. I’m actually glad they got a chance to see first-hand.”
Allen was kicked off the team in 2016 for his role in an alleged home burglary. He landed in Scooba, Miss., where his rehabilitation was broadcast to the world. Texas Tech not only took him back in, but made him a team captain as a junior. He repaid that trust by making 101 total tackles and becoming the star of an improved defense.
What should the Longhorns watch for?
Get a body on Allen or he’ll end up causing problems. He’s just as comfortable blitzing quarterbacks as he is dropping into coverage, and he makes the majority of his tackles near the line of scrimmage.
Allen made a season-high 13 tackles, including a sack, as the Red Raiders escaped Austin with a 27-23 win. He didn’t play against the Longhorns in 2015.
