Football season will be here before you know it. Through the dog days of summer, we’re going to get you prepared  with a series on some of the best players Texas will face in 2018.

Who is he?

A fourth-year starter and former five-star recruit, Iman Marshall has yet to fulfill his potential in a USC uniform. He admitted as much this spring.

“I’m not going to lie to you,” he told the Orange County Register, “it wasn’t my whole idea for what my ideal season was. I feel it was a wake-up call.”

After all, 2017 was supposed to be a breakout year for Marshall. We had him No. 7 on this list a year ago, the expectation being that he would step right into the void left by Adoree’ Jackson. Instead, he had his least productive season for the Trojans, continuing a downward trend since a 67-tackle, three-interception freshman campaign in 2015. He was slowed by a knee injury that caused him to miss three games, and dropped far enough on draft boards that he decided to return to school.

Coaches praised Marshall’s effort during the spring, and the talent is certainly there. The only question is whether he can put the full package together.

Highlights

What should the Longhorns watch for?

Marshall gets the unenviable task of trying to lock down Collin Johnson. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, Marshall gives up less weight than most of the corners Johnson faces, and he likes to be physical. On occasion, this can lead to getting beat off the line. This will be one of the matchups to watch on Sept. 15.

Past encounter

Marshall made eight tackles against Texas last season. Lining up against Johnson most of the night, he gave up several big plays that helped the Longhorns force overtime. Johnson finished with seven catches for 191 yards.
