Football season will be here before you know it. Through the dog days of summer, we’re going to get you prepared with a series on some of the best players Texas will face in 2018.
Who is he?
The USC defense is stacked with experienced players who will soon be in the NFL. Three of them landed in the top 10 of this list, starting with Marvell Tell III. At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, he’s the prototype of what scouts look for in a safety, and he’ll be entering his fourth year as a starter for the Trojans after he decided to come back. Tell was an All-Pac 12 first team pick last fall, after he posted career highs in tackles (85) and interceptions (three). His role will grow even larger in 2018 with the departure of Chris Hawkins at the other safety spot.
What should the Longhorns watch for?
Remember Tell’s interception against Texas last year? It was overshadowed by a controversial no-call for a potential facemask penalty, but the play Tell made is a great example of the danger he presents. Sam Ehlinger was under pressure, but thought he had a sure safety valve in tight end Cade Brewer. Instead, Tell sprinted all the way from the other side of the field to dive in front of the pass.
In addition to the interception, Tell made four tackles against the Longhorns.
