What’s the best way to turn San Jacinto Boulevard into a festive atmosphere before all Longhorns games? Food trucks and $5 beer is a great start.
The Texas athletic department released details about its revamped gameday changes on Tuesday and gave clues about what fans can expect at Royal-Memorial Stadium this season.
UT athletic director Chris Del Conte said in April he wanted to turn San Jacinto Boulevard into a carnival-like atmosphere by removing cars and having a party. The new concept along “Bevo Boulevard” will certainly be a radical change, for sure.
“Our goal is to have the best gameday atmosphere in the country, and Bevo Blvd. is a big step in that direction,” Del Conte said in a statement. Bevo Boulevard is free and open to the public. No game ticket is required.
As part of the festivities outlined by UT, Bevo XV will lead a street parade approximately 3 1/2-hours before kickoff each Saturday home game. The parade will begin at the corner of San Jacinto Boulevard and East 20th Street.
The football team will then arrive 2 1/2-hours before game time on the north end of Royal-Memorial Stadium.
Leading up to the game, fans can choose from what UT called “the finest food truck flavors in Austin with different vendors each gameday.” Vendors will also sell $5 16-ounce domestic beers, $6 16-ounce premium beers and $5 wine spritzers. Those prices increase after kickoff, according to UT.
Two giant LED screens will be trucked in so fans can watch other Big 12 games. The pre-game radio show on 104.9 The Horn will also broadcast live from the stadium.
UT promises interactive games, photo opportunities and activities for all fans. There will be autographs opportunities with select UT players and coaches.
“I am excited that we are able to bring a central, public tailgate for all Longhorns fans directly adjacent to the stadium,” said Drew Martin, UT’s new director of external affairs. “I am confident fans will be excited to return week after week to put their full energy behind the burnt orange and white.”
