Track and field, softball staff overhauls to come at a price for Texas

Posted August 9th, 2018

In terms of salaries, Texas will pay a pretty penny for the overhaul of its softball and track and field programs.

Texas has almost doubled the base salaries of its softball team’s coaching staff. The Longhorns will also be paying the coaches in its track and field program more in aggregate. The salaries for UT’s new coaches were obtained by the American-Statesman through an open records request.

Hired away from Oregon, Texas softball coach Mike White agreed to a five-year contract with a starting annual base salary of $505,000. His two assistants, ex-Duck assistant Chelsea Spencer and former University of Mary coach Kerry Shaw, will respectively make $130,000 and $120,000. During the 2017-18 school year, the base salaries for head coach Connie Clark ($210,000) and assistants Tripp MacKay ($96,900) and Jennifer McFalls ($82,200) totaled $389,100.

Clark stepped down in May after 22 varsity seasons at Texas.

After leading Kentucky’s track and field program for six years, Edrick Floréal agreed to leave for Texas and a five-year contract with a starting annual base salary of $450,000. At $104,500, throws coach Zeb Sion will be the program’s highest-paid assistant. Each of the other four assistants on Floréal’s coaching staff will make $102,500.

Texas was an assistant track and field coach short during its 2018 seasons, and head coach Mario Sategna was fired in February. Sategna had a base salary of $236,669. UT’s four assistants had an average base salary of $129,310, with those payouts ranging from $80,765 to $204,000.

Floréal and White’s contracts still need to be approved by the UT board of regents.
