The Texas soccer team started quick but couldn’t pick up the win, settling for a 1-1 draw with the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels on the road Wednesday.

The teams played two overtimes, 110 minutes in the draw.

Despite getting outshot 20-9, No. 21 Texas just trailed 6-5 in shots on goal.

“Both teams battled back and forth,” said head coach on the team’s Twitter page. “Just really proud of my squad. Cyera Hintzen to put that ball away in the first ten minutes is big time.”

Hintzen scored in the second minute, unassisted, to give the Longhorns an early lead. Hintzen converted from the top of the box after a turnover by North Carolina. She leads the Longhorns with two goals already in the young season.

Texas (1-0-1) held the lead until the 53rd minute when Taylor Otto tied the game with help from Rachael Dorwart and Brianna Pinto.

Nicole Curry made four saves in 110 minutes in net for the Longhorns. She also turned away a penalty kick in the 24th minute.

The Tar Heels (2-0-1) had two goalkeepers play. Samantha Leshnak started and allowed the UT goal. She played the first half while Claudia Dickey made four saves to hold Texas scoreless the rest of the way.

Hintzen had a shot saved in the 94th minute and Haley Berg had one blocked just seconds later.

Curry made a save in the final minute to preserve the result for Texas.

The Texas soccer team faces another top-25 challenge Friday when it faces No. 23 Central Florida at 4 p.m.
