What Tom Herman said after Texas raced past No. 17-ranked TCU

Posted September 22nd, 2018

Is Texas back? Whatever you believe, the Longhorns took a big step forward Saturday by beating No. 17-ranked TCU 31-16.

Things looked dicey in the third quarter as the Texas offense sputtered, but a diving touchdown catch by Collin Johnson ignited a burnt orange onslaught. A pair of interceptions by Caden Sterns highlighted another stellar outing by the defense, and quarterback Sam Ehlinger was mistake free all the way through his game-sealing touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

Afterward, Longhorns coach Tom Herman addressed the media — including American-Statesman reporters Brian Davis, Danny Davis, Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden. Here’s some of what Herman had to say during his postgame press conference.

Opening statement:

“Great team win. Our defense carried us when they needed to. That was a really good football team, and it was tough sledding at times. … This is just one step. This is not the end-all, be all. This is another good win against another great opponent. We’re going to celebrate it, enjoy it, and understand that we’ve got to go on the road for the first time in a month against a Kansas State team that is always tough to play against.”

On inconsistency of kicker Cameron Dicker:

“I was surprised, but one of them was a pretty far one that the wind was blowing consistently. The other one, we’ve got to do a better job with our composure with the new rules the NCAA has put in to speed up play. That clock is winding.”

On resiliency of team:

“Our third-down offense was not good. Credit TCU, that’s a really, really good defense. There’s a grit to this team that’s fun to be around. There’s no head-hanging, there’s no bad body language, there’s no doubt. We were confident in the way we prepared. I really like the grit and tenacity of this team that they’ve shown the past two weeks.”

On play of defensive backs:

“It was fearless, and that’s the one thing we’ve been preaching for a while around here. When you’re confident in your preparation and your teammates’ preparation, then it should be very easy to play without fear.”
