Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger said Tuesday he couldn’t remember what he said to Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray when the two met at the Cotton Bowl on Oct. 6.
“Oh, I went up to him and congratulate him on a great game. That was all,” Ehlinger said. “I respect his game and that was it.”
The brief exchange after Texas’ 48-45 win went south, though. Asked what he said specifically, Ehlinger said, “Ah, I can’t really remember.”
Video shows Ehlinger wearing a towel on his head and saying something before walking away. “I don’t remember what I said,” Ehlinger said.
On Monday, Murray was asked by Oklahoma reporters if he respected Ehlinger’s game. “I have no comment on that,” Murray said.
Given a chance to retort, Ehlinger said, “I’d absolutely love to comment on that. I absolutely respect his game.”
Ehlinger also told reporters weeks ago he deleted the Twitter app from his phone. Then he launched a rocket through social media at 5:54 p.m. Monday.
“Ok. Cool Hook Em!,” Ehlinger tweeted with two Hook ’em hand sign emojis.
When Ehlinger met with reporters on Tuesday, Ehlinger said he didn’t know why he tweeted that specific phrase and wasn’t directing it at anyone. “That’s a good question,” he said. “I like the phrase.”
The phrase has taken off on social media ever since former Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith tweeted out a screenshot of an alleged conversation between himself and UT coach Tom Herman. Based on the screenshot, Smith made a series of personal accusations, and Herman responded by texting back, “OK. Cool. Hook Em!”
