Big 12 opener for both teams was competitive, sloppy

Led by Sug Sutton, Texas opened its Big 12 Conference schedule by defeating Oklahoma State 60-51 Wednesday night at the Erwin Center.

The junior point guard scored 13 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 5 assists  and the Longhorns withstood a late Oklahoma State rally.

Texas is 11-2, 1-0. OSU is 9-3, 0-1.

Guard Danni Williams had 11 points and forward Joyner Holmes 10 for Texas, which overcame 25 turnovers.

In an incredibly sloppy first half for both teams, Texas took a 33-16 lead into the locker room. A 10-point scoring streak  by Texas to close the second quarter helped the Horns pull away for a comfortable lead.

Oklahoma State had 16 turnovers to complement its 16 points at the half. The Longhorns led despite committing 17 turnovers in the first two quarters.

Texas will continue its Big 12 season at 3 p.m. Sunday at West Virginia.

Texas had a 52-32 lead with eight minutes to play but went scoreless for seven minutes. The Cowgirls, led by Braxtin Miller, cut the lead to 52-47 with 1:40 to play but would get no closer.

Miller finished with 18 points.
