The Texas men’s tennis team swept Mississippi 7-0 in its first dual match of 2019 in Orlando, Fla. Wednesday.
The competition was held at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center, which will host the NCAA Championships in May.
The Longhorns took six singles wins and earned the doubles point without losing a set in the competition.
“This week you are trying to assess things,” UT head coach Michael Center said. “When we really needed to make plays, we did a good job of that. It was a really good team effort and we had a great week. It was a great start, and we’ll come home excited to play SMU.”
Harrison Scott and Christian Sigsgaard won 6-1 over Fabian Fallert and Tim Sandkaulen to open doubles action. Colin Markes and Leonardo Telles won 6-2 to seal the doubles point.
Sigsgaard then defeated Tim Sandkaulen 6-4, 6-4 to put Texas up 2-0.
Chih Chi Huang gave Texas a 3-0 lead when he defeated Cotter Wilson 6-2, 6-3.
Yuya Ito clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Filip Kraljevic.
Markes defeated Simon Junk 7-6 (4), 6-4 before Scott topped Jan Soren Hain 6-3, 7-6 (4). Telles closed out the match with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win over Fabian Fallert.
“We wanted to see the Campus, it was exciting to be here,” Center said. “Our goal is to be back here for the NCAA Championships in May. It was a great experience, and we really enjoyed it. ”
The Longhorns next host SMU Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Center.
