The Texas women’s tennis team claimed seven wins on the first day of the Freeman Memorial Championships in Las Vegas Friday.
Petra Granic took two singles wins and teamed up with Tijana Spasojevic to take a doubles victory.
Spasojevic and Granic beat a duo from Florida 6-3 and will compete in the doubles quarterfinals at noon Saturday.
Bojana Markovic and Fernanda Labraña also won a doubles match, beating a team from Pepperdine 6-4.
Markovic also won in the singles round of 32, defeating No. 9 Ida Jarlskog of Florida 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. The upset win didn’t propel her to another win, however. She fell in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-1 to Adriana Lekaj of Pepperdine.
Granic topped Chloe Oullet-Pizer of North Carolina 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 32. Later Granic defeated Izumi Asano of UNLV 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Singles competition begins at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Anna Turati beat Anastasia Khartionova of Florida 6-1, 6-2 in the Flight 1 Consolation. Labraña also won in the consolation round, beating Kimberly Lee of Stanford 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
