Freshman Ashley Joens scored 22 points to lead No. 20 Iowa State to an 82-73 victory over No. 18 Texas Saturday night at the Erwin Center.
It was a critical loss for the Longhorns, who were hoping to be a No. 2 seed at the conference tournament next weekend. Texas dropped to 21-8, 11-6 in the Big 12. Iowa State is 22-7, 12-5.
Texas drops into a third-place tie with West Virginia for third place in the conference.
Junior guard Sug Sutton led the Longhorns with 21 points. Danni Williams had 15.
Iowa State, one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the nation every year, used the long ball to its advantage. The Cyclones made 8 treys in the first half. With Ashley Jones hitting four of them, Iowa State earned a 42-23 lead at halftime.
Texas would get no closer to seven points of the lead in the second half. A bucket by Williams with 38 seconds to play cut the margin to 74-67, but it was too late.
Iowa State hit a few milestones on Saturday. Bridget Carleton eclipsed the 2,000-point barrier for her career when she buried her first hot of the game. Also, the Cyclones have made a 3-point shot in 764 straight games, extending their own NCAA record.
Texas will close its regular season Tuesday night at TCU. The Big 12 Tournament is March 8-11 in Oklahoma City.
The Longhorns opened the night by honoring their three seniors — Jatarie White, Olamide Aborowa and Williams — for their last home game.
Joyner Holmes scored 13 points before fouling out with 2:42 to play.
