The Longhorns softball team had a mixed bag of results Saturday at the Sun Devil Classic in Tempe, Ariz., going 1-1 as they defeated Princeton 15-2 in five innings before losing to Wisconsin 3-1 in nine frames.
Texas (16-2) extended its winning streak to 10 before falling to Wisconsin.
The Badgers (15-2) exacted a bit of revenge on the Longhorns after falling to Texas 5-1 in the Classic opener. Wisconsin needed two extra innings, but a three-run ninth proved to be the difference.
Kaitlyn Menz, who lost the previous game to Texas, picked up the win in 2 2/3 innings to improve to 5-1.
Melanie Cross drove in the first run of the game in the top of the ninth off Brooke Bolinger (3-2), scoring Taylor Johnson. Caroline Hedgcock added another score when she drove home pinch runner Tyra Turner. A ground out by Jolie Fish plated Cross, leaving the Longhorns with some work to do in the bottom of the inning.
Texas managed just one run, however, on an RBI double by Lauren Burke.
Another stellar performance by freshman Shealyn O’Leary wasn’t enough to get Texas the win. Just one run in the first seven innings would have made history for UT and O’Leary. Starting the season 5-0, she still needs a win in her next decision to be the first UT freshman to start her career 6-0. O’Leary didn’t give up a run and allowed just three hits in seven innings. She struck out four.
In the first game, Texas used a nine-run fourth inning to solidify the win over Princeton.
Burke went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs. MK Tedder also went 2-for-2 as she scored three runs, stole two bases and hit a home run. Mallory Schattle also homered, finishing with two RBIs.
Princeton managed just three hits against the Longhorns as Ariana Adams improved to 3-0 in the circle. She gave up two runs and struck out three.
The Longhorns softball team concludes action at the Sun Devil Classic with one more game against Arizona State Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
