A pair of Longhorns reach podium at NCAA Indoor Championships

Two members of the Texas track and field team reached the podium on the first day of the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala., on Friday.

Tripp Piperi and Ashtin Zamzow highlighted the day for the Texas men’s and women’s track teams. The men sit in a tie for sixth after the first day with eight points. First place LSU has 20 points. The women have six points and are tied for 12th. New Mexico leads the women with 17 points.

Piperi took second place in the men’s shot put, recording a mark of 68 feet, 10 inches for a personal best throw. His mark earned the team eight points and is the seventh best throw in school history.

Zamzow took third place in the pentathlon with 4,294 points, a personal best and school record. She hit personal bests in all but one event during the competition. Zamzow’s best performance came in the 60-meter hurdles which she finished in second place with a time of 8.38 seconds. Her finish netted the women’s team six points.

In semifinals action, Sam Worley finished first in his heat in the mile event with a time of 4:09.20. John Burt also advanced to finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.78.

Teahna Daniels and Kynnedy Flannel each advanced to finals as well. Daniels won her 60 meter heat in 7.23. Flannel finished her 200 heat in second with a time of 22.96.

The NCAA Indoor Championships conclude on Saturday.
