Thanks to a three-run eighth inning, Texas Tech pulled away from a pitchers’ duel at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.

Texas Tech junior Caleb Kilian, who beat UT in Lubbock last year, one-hit the Longhorns over his seven-inning appearance. Red Raider reliever Clayton Beeter issued three ninth-inning walks, but Texas could not avoid its third shutout of the year. UT had only two runners reach second base on Sunday.

Texas starting pitcher Blair Henley allowed three hits, but the Red Raiders chased the junior right-hander during the decisive eighth inning. (Henley was held responsible for two of the frame’s runs.) The six-strikeout start, though, was still a quality outing. Battling an offense that was batting .304 and averaging 8.7 runs per game, Henley dropped his ERA from 4.79 to 4.23.

The 12th-ranked team in the D1Baseball poll, Texas suffered its seventh loss of the season. The Longhorns (14-7) are now 1-1 in Big 12 play. No. 11 Texas Tech (12-4) is also 1-1 against its conference foes.

NOTABLE NUMBER: 20. Saturday was Henley’s third career start against Texas Tech, and he has covered 15 2/3 innings in those games. Joining Stanford and TCU, Texas Tech is the third team that Henley has faced three times. The 20 innings that Henley has tossed against Stanford is the most he’s thrown against any foe.

UP NEXT: The Longhorns and Red Raiders will close out their series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Texas has not yet announced who it will start on the mound. Texas Tech is expected to throw LHP Mason Montgomery (2-0; 5.02 ERA).
