Miranda Elish did it all for the Longhorns softball team, pitching a five-inning no-hitter and driving in five runs as Texas defeated Iowa State 11-0 in a run-rule win at McCombs Field on Friday.
Elish went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a run scored in Texas’ Big 12 opener. Before her bases-clearing homer in the fifth, she drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the fourth.
Four Longhorns drove in runs on the night. Reagan Hathaway’s only hit drove home Kaitlyn Washington in the fourth. Washington scored three runs on the day. Her first score came in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Janae Jefferson. Washington also scored on Elish’s grand slam.
Jefferson went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. McKenzie Parker drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run in the fourth after she scored in the second.
Ki’Audra Hayter reached base on an error in the second inning that allowed the Longhorns (27-6, 1-0 Big 12) to score twice. Texas ended the second with a 3-0 lead. The Longhorns then added four runs in the next inning before Elish put it away in the fifth.
Iowa State drops to 17-11 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12. The teams face each other again Saturday at 1 p.m.
