In a battle between two of the nation’s top pitching staffs, Texas may be fighting without one of its aces.

Texas coach Mike White told reporters on Wednesday that freshman standout Shea O’Leary might miss the 11th-ranked Longhorns’ upcoming series against No. 1 Oklahoma. A right-handed pitcher, O’Leary is dealing with an ankle injury. Her status was described by White as “day-to-day.”

“We’ve got some rehab working on her,” White said. “We’re hoping she may be ready sometime this series, but we’ll have to wait and see. We certainly don’t want to jeopardize the rest of this season for this series.”

Over 83 innings this season, O’Leary is 12-1 with a 0.51 ERA, 54 strikeouts and 10 walks. O’Leary has beaten No. 8 Tennessee, thrown a perfect game against Baylor and no-hit Longwood. She currently leads UCLA’s Rachel Garcia by 0.14 for the NCAA’s ERA title.

Oklahoma and Texas rank first and third nationally in ERA. (Additionally, Oklahoma’s .374 batting average and 8.2 runs per game are tops in the NCAA.) In addition to O’Leary’s contributions, Texas has gotten an 11-5 record, a 1.48 ERA, 152 strikeouts and two Big 12 pitcher of the week awards from junior Miranda Elish.  Senior left-hander Brooke Bolinger is 8-3 with a 2.20 ERA and 95 strikeouts.

Texas (36-9, 7-3 Big 12), and Oklahoma (38-2; 9-0) will open their three-game series at McCombs Field on Thursday evening. The Sooners have won their last 15 games against their Red River rivals.
