Texas baseball head coach David Pierce acknowledged that there wasn’t a lot of room for error for the Longhorns regarding getting to the postseason after the series against West Virginia. There’s less room now, if there is any.

After ending a six-game losing streak Sunday, the Longhorns couldn’t keep the momentum as they fell 8-2 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on the road Tuesday.

The win is the first for the Islanders over the Longhorns at home in Corpus Christi.

The Islanders scored two runs in each of four innings to take the win. The Longhorns (25-22) opened the game nicely, putting up two runs in the first inning, but that’s all they could muster.

After Islanders starter Dylan Duarte gave up two runs, the bullpen shut out the Longhorns the rest of the way.

Zach Rumfield picked up the win as he didn’t allow a hit to Texas in four innings of relief. He struck out four of the 12 batters he faced.

Luke Marbach had two RBIs and scored a run for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (28-20). Nick Anderson doubled and scored a run. Itchy Burts tripled and scored twice for the Islanders. Thomas Jeffries IV tied Marbach with the team lead in RBIs with two.

Kolby Kubichek suffered the loss, though he wasn’t the only Longhorns pitcher to give up two runs. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Texas Starter Coy Cobb, Donny Diaz and Owen Meaney each gave up two runs.

Texas got on the scoreboard first with a two-run double by Zach Zubia. Eric Kennedy and Austin Todd scored on the play. Texas had just two more hits in the next eight innings. No batter outside the first four in the lineup had a hit.

The Texas baseball team will try to get back on track in a road Big 12 series against Kansas beginning Friday at 6 p.m. in Lawrence.
