LSU and Texas will both get national primetime TV exposure this fall at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
The high-profile, non-conference matchup will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 7, an ESPN spokesman said. The game will air on ABC’s “Saturday Night Football” broadcast.
LSU will be making its first trip to Austin since 1954. The two teams have played only twice since then in the 1963 and 2003 Cotton Bowls. The first matchup came in 1896, and Texas leads the all-time series 9-7-1.
Texas and LSU should be considerable favorites to win their respective season openers. Texas opens at home against Louisiana Tech; LSU starts against Georgia Southern. Should both teams win, the LSU-Texas game will be the third top-25 matchup at Royal-Memorial Stadium in the last four home games.
No. 15 Texas lost to No. 12 West Virginia 42-41 on Nov. 3 last season. Then, No. 13 Texas beat No. 18 Iowa State 24-10 on Nov. 17. The Longhorns went on to finish the season with a 10-4 record and a win over No. 5 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
No determinations have been made on College GameDay’s location for Sept. 7, a network spokesman said. However, the LSU-Texas game figures to be high on ESPN’s list.
Other high-profile kickoff times — including the annual Texas-Oklahoma game — are likely to be announced during Big 12 media days in mid-July. Most Big 12 conference kickoff times are announced two weeks before the actual game.
