The Texas women’s golf team came up just short of advancing at the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., on Tuesday.
The No. 2 Longhorns fell to No. 13 Auburn 3-2 during the quarterfinals of match play at Blessings Golf Club.
The fifth place tie for Texas is its best finish since taking third place in 2003.
Hailee Cooper and Kaitlyn Papp earned two wins for Texas on Tuesday. Cooper defeated Kaleigh Telfer 1 up. Papp bested Elena Hualde 2 up.
Auburn’s three wins came against Emilee Hoffman, Agathe Laisne and Sára Kousková. Mychael O’Berry won the final three holes to take the match against Kousková. Julie McCarthy topped Laisne 3 and 1. Brooke Samson and Hoffman played 20 holes and Samson came out on top in the end.
The result caps a season where Texas won an NCAA regional for the first time in school history. The Longhorns also won five tournaments and earned a No. 1 ranking.
