TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Texas star pitcher Miranda Elish was taken to an area hospital after she was struck in the face by a teammate’s throw in a game against Alabama on Friday night.

Elish was hit in the face by a second-inning throw by UT catcher Mary Iakopo, who was trying to throw out a runner at second base. Elish immediately fell to the ground and needed to be helped off the field. A Texas spokesperson later said that Elish was “doing well, and was taken to the ER as a precaution.”

An All-American candidate, Elish entered the second game of the Tuscaloosa super regional with a 18-10 record and a 1.72 ERA. Last week, Elish added her name to UT lore with four complete games over two days at the Austin regional.

Alabama quickly grabbed a 4-0 lead after Elish’s injury. In the third inning, however, Iakopo hit a three-run homer to pull Texas within a run in a game that is currently ongoing. Texas must beat Alabama in order to keep its season alive.

UPDATE: Following UT’s 7-5 win over Alabama, Texas coach Mike White said that Elish was in “good spirits” and had sent the team a congratulatory message with her doing the “Hook ’em” sign. White said the softball hit Elish on the side of the nose by her cheekbone. Elish has been ruled out for the rest of the super regional, which wraps up on Saturday afternoon. White said it had not yet been determined if Elish would need surgery or how she would be transported back to Austin.
