A Texas spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that softball players Chloe Romero and Jaden Hoelker have entered the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Softball America was the first to report on these impending departures from Texas. Romero was a sophomore pitcher this past season. Hoelker, a utility player, just completed her freshman year.

Romero was a heralded recruit out of Helendale, Calif.., when she joined UT’s 2017 recruiting class. As a freshman, she pitched just 16 innings and went 1-2 with a 5.69 ERA. In what will likely be used as a redshirt season, Romero did not play this spring and wasn’t among the 20 players who were allowed to dress in the postseason.

Hoelker was used as a pinch-runner in four of her seven outings at UT. In three plate appearances, the Aubrey native went 1-for-2 with a walk. Listed as an infielder and outfielder on UT’s roster, Hoelker also trained as an emergency catcher following an early-season injury to Taylor Ellsworth.

Texas was already set to lose three seniors — pitcher Brooke Bolinger and outfielder Bekah Alcozer and Ki’Audra Hayter — but the team has signed five high school seniors. UT went 46-17 and reached a super regional in 2019. The NFCA ranked Texas 11th in its final poll, which was UT’s best season-ending ranking since the 2013 season.
