‘A true Longhorn Legend’: Texas reacts to the death of Cedric Benson

Former Texas star running back Cedric Benson was killed in a motorcycle accident on Saturday night.

Benson, 36, starred at Texas from 2001-04. His 5,540 rushing yards and 64 touchdown runs both rank second in the UT record books. He won the Doak Walker Award in 2004.

Following his four years on the 40 Acres, Benson spent eight seasons in the NFL. After being taken by Chicago with the fourth pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, Benson also suited up for Cincinnati and Green Bay.  On the NFL’s all-time rushing charts, Benson ranks 88th all-time with 6,017 yards.

Following the news of Benson’s death, his former teammates, coaches and fans took to their social media platforms to mourn. Said former Texas coach Mack Brown: “We’ve coached a lot of tough players but none were tougher than Cedric.”
